Daniel Arsham’s Eroded Porsche 911: A Petrolhead’s Encounter With Art

Share

When you walk into a place like the Moco Museum, you expect to see names that have shaped modern and contemporary art – Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, among others. What I didn’t expect to find during a recent visit to Moco’s London location was something from the world of cars.

Yet there it was: Daniel Arsham’s Blue Calcite Eroded Porsche 911 sculpture. Known for his ‘future relics’, the New York-based artist had created a vision of time and decay, cast in fibreglass, steel, and minerals.

At first glance, the 1980 Porsche 911 SCs unmistakable lines are all there. But then, you notice Arsham’s signature touches. Sections of the car that seem to have crumbled away, are replaced with blue calcite and quartz crystals. It’s as if this Porsche had been buried for centuries before being unearthed as an artefact.

Seeing a Porsche 911 in a museum is nothing new – we celebrate Stuttgart’s finest in automotive exhibitions all around the world. But here at the Moco Museum London, this 911 exists as a bridge between car culture and art.

It made me think about the 911’s timeless appeal, and how even in a state of ‘decay’ its beauty remains undeniable.

As someone who’s spent years at race tracks, in garages, and at car meets, seeing a Porsche in any form is always special. But this felt different.

Ultimately, experiencing the Blue Calcite Eroded Porsche 911 in person was a powerful reminder that cars don’t just live on the road or in the garage – they have cultural weight and significance beyond speed and performance.
